As we board the plane, prodding small boys down the crowded aisle and bumping every seat we pass with the Sherpa-sized packs strapped to our shoulders, the old adage weasels annoyingly to mind: it’s the journey, not the destination.

Impatient for the endpoint, I shove aside the cliché as I stow our carry-ons under the seats. I’m more focused on getting the four of us to point B in one piece rather than enjoying the ride.

But as we fasten our seatbelts, I still find myself forecasting how this flight will unfold. As always Sam will curl into Franco’s arms with the awkward fold of lanky boy limbs into father’s lap. By the time we reach cruising altitude they’ll be sleeping soundly, both of them scrunched against the unforgiving plastic of the plane’s curved wall, heads tipped back in heavy slumber, arms hanging heavy at their sides.

Sure enough, when I look across the aisle shortly after takeoff, they’re already snoozing.
